SEPTEMBER 2 - The monthly meeting of the Waldo County Family Caregiver Support Group will be on Thursday, September 2nd, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. in the Conference Room of Waldo County Home Health & Hospice located in the professional building across the street from Waldo County General Hospital at 119 Northport Avenue in Belfast.
All caregivers and their family and friends are welcome to attend and share experiences or concerns. You are welcome to bring your lunch. For more information on the meeting or the care givers group, call Margie Spencer-Smith at 930-2500 ext. 4795.

DEDICATION FOR THE RENOVATIONS OF THE GYMNASIUM, "JINA'S GYM", IN MEMORY OF JINA HASLAM . Donations were requested in Jina's memory and the original plan was to build a new gym; however, due to many set backs, this dream was impossible. A Committee then voted that the best use of the funds was to renovate. We now have an enhanced gymnasium for all to enjoy.

Registration is going on now for all fall programs at the Down East Family YMCA. Programs include soccer, swim lessons, swim team, afterschool and much more. Help support animals in need at the Bangor Humane Society at the seventeenth annual Paws on Parade!
The Paws on Parade is Saturday, October 9 at the Bangor Waterfront starting at nine a.m. The largest fundraiser of the year, the parade walks through downtown Bangor and along the Waterfront; strut your stuff with your dog or friends and family!
Pre-register by September 10 at the shelter or online at firstgiving dot com. No registration fee, and all participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of one hundred dollars!

Women, Work, and Community Offers Introduction to Self-Employment Workshops - Do you have a business idea you want to put into action? Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community will offer an introductory business planning workshop on Tuesday September 21 from 9:30 to Noon at University College in Bangor.
The Introduction to Self-Employment workshop will walk participants through the pros and cons of owning your own business, show you how to get started step by step, point out the major elements of a business plan, introduce resources available in locally and statewide, and help you decide whether self-employment is the right choice for you. The training is open to women, men, couples, and all entrepreneurs who are considering starting a business.
Women, Work, and Community will also offer be a 3 session class Basics of Business Tuesday October 12, 10 and 26 from 9:30 to 12:30 at University College. The class covers the basics of a business plan, marketing, cash planning and is suitable fro those thinking about or in the early start-up phase of a new business. Pre-registration is required for all workshops and classes. There is no fee for the trainings.

Win a Cruise off the Coast of Belfast, a weekend trip to Sugarloaf, brunch for two at the Lucerne Inn or a Basket filled with gift certificates from downtown Bangor. These are just a few of the many items you could win by participating in the Power of 10 Raffle being held by the Maine Children’s Scholarship Fund (MCSF). The proceeds will benefit Maine children in grades K-12 who are in need of tuition assistance. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Winners will be chosen on September 9, 2010. Tickets can be purchased by contacting MCSF Program Director, Kari Hunt at 948-5321 or sending a check to MCSF, PO Box 913, Bangor, ME 04402-0913.
The Maine Children’s Scholarship Fund serves the entire State of Maine. MCSF provides tuition scholarships for Maine students in kindergarten through grade 12 for public or private school, or home schooling expenses. The organization provides 75% of tuition per child up to $1,700 or $500 for home school families. Their income must be at or below the Federal guidelines for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program in order to be eligible. Families must contribute a minimum of 25% of tuition.

Does a parent, spouse, friend, or child over 18 depend on you for help with: bathing, feeding, dressing, shopping, medications, leaving the house? If so, you are a caregiver and you are invited to join the ongoing caregiver’s support group at Friendship Cottage.
The support group is free of charge and open to all caregivers of dependant adults in Hancock County. The group meets the first Friday of every month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Caregiver Resource Center at Friendship Cottage.
Friendship Cottage is located at 118 Ellsworth Road (Route 172) in Blue Hill. On-site respite is available for dependant adults with prior arrangement. For information, call 374-5612.

Basic Life Support Classes
Basic Life Support is designed to provide people the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Basic Life Support classes are $45 and are held at Eastern Maine Medical Center, located at 489 State
Street in Bangor. Please call 973-4600 to register for the class.

Bangor, ME Hospice of Eastern Maine (HOEM) will be holding its annual volunteer training course on six consecutive Tuesdays, October 12th ~ November 16th, 5:30 – 9:00 p.m., at the EMMC Healthcare Mall, 885 Union St., Bangor. HOEM invites caring men and women who live in a 25 mile radius of Bangor to apply for a space in this fall’s training course. Our comprehensive training course will help prospective volunteers better understand the complexities of end-of-life and prepare them to offer companionship, emotional support, respite, and bereavement care for hospice patients and their families. Hospice care focuses on the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of hospice patients and their loved ones. Trained professionals deliver the physical, psych-social, and spiritual aspects of care; hospice volunteers provide companionship and comfort care, such as talking, playing games, reading, writing letters, recording memoirs, making a meal, driving to appointments, or simply listening. For more information about patient care and other volunteer opportunities with Hospice of Eastern Maine and/or to request an application packet, please call Wayne Melanson, Volunteer Manager at 973-8269 or e-mail wmelanson@emh.org. Aspiring patient care volunteers must complete an application and interview prior to October 8th. Class size is limited to 16.
